KEY DATA, FIGURES, AND STATISTICS: Managing Cameroon’s dual French and English heritages

Through an overview of key data on the geographic and demographic patterns of use of Cameroon’s French and English system legacies, we provide a snapshot of how these systems are used by its citizens, and across the country. We also present some statistical survey data on the socio-economic, governance, and security context in the primarily Anglophone regions prior to the onset of the crisis, which may help clarify the crisis’ triggers and dynamics. All data sources are acknowledged in the corresponding charts.

• How many Cameroonians in the country’s different regions, speak or use one or both of the country’s official languages?

• How many Cameroonians are actually bilingual in its two official languages (English and French)?

• What have been the patterns of use and enrolment in the French and English sub-systems of education between the country’s Regions? (Sample taken from secondary education)

• What was the objective socio-economic situation of the NW and SW regions before the onset of the crisis in 2016? Did these regions rank much worse in development indicators, compared to other regions of the country?

• Is there data available before the onset of the crisis, on whether the population of the two primarily English-speaking regions expressed discontent over their socio-economic conditions, discrimination, or concerns about conflict and insecurity?

• Is there data available before the onset of the crisis, on the level of trust by the population of the two primarily English-speaking regions in the State/public administration, the political system and institutions, and on their sense of national identity (belonging)? And data on their subsequent perception of what caused the crisis?
